What is the Taal?

Taal or beat cycle is the same thing. In Indian Classical Music we associate rhythm as Taal. It is said that music cannot be formed without the rhythm. Rhythm is so much connected to body and soul that even we have a particular rhythm in our heart. We are born with the rhythm and died when the rhythm stops.


All the compositions in the music are set in the particular taal. Taal consists of different number of beats called mattras in Indian Classical Music. There are various combination of beat cycles starting from 4 beats upto 16 beats generally.


Following are the different types of taals:


1. Keherwa (4/8 beats)

2. Dadra (6 beats)

3. Roopak (7 beats)

4. Jhaptaal (5/10 beats)

5. Ek Taal (12 beats)

6. Ada Chautaal (14 beats)

7. Teen Taal (16 beats)


Here are the few terms related to Taal:

1. Khand

2. Sum

3. Khali

4. Taali

5. Laya


Khand:

The interval between the bars is known as Khand.


Sum:

The first and most dominant beat in the taal, shown by a cross below the beat.


Khali:

Usually the beat in the middle of the taal, shown by 0 below the beat.


Taali:

Start of each khand other than Sum and Khaali is known as Taali. Sum is taken as first taali.


Laya:

The speed of the the taal. It is also referred as tempo. Laya is divided in three types:

1. Vilamat (Slow)

2. Madhaya (Medium)

3. Drut (Fast)

Each taal have different syllables (bols), for the example let’s take Teen Taal, which is also known to be the mother of taals.


Teen Taal (16 beats):


Dhin Dhin Dha Dha |

Dhin Dhin Dha Dha |

Tin Tin Ta Ta |

Dhin Dhin Dha Dha |
